The global need for raw resources is increasing dramatically. Simultaneously, we throw away a lot of material, unnecessarily wasting value, polluting the environment and changing the climate. From the Netherlands Circular in 2050, the Dutch Grondstoffenakkoord (Raw Materials Agreement) arose, an agreement between governments, companies, unions, nature and environmental organisations, knowledge institutions, financial institutions and other social organisations to make the transition to a circular economy possible. Over 330 companies and organisations have signed the Raw Materials Agreement.

11:00 Bas Froon, UNSEAM

Title: 3D self shaping textiles: the future of manufacturing?

Bas Froon is co-founder of UNSEAM, leading the digital manufacturing technologies and product development. He researched the future of production systems, new biocomposite materials and developed new digital textile machines (micromoulding machine). In 2018 he invented together with Karin Vlug the patented 3D Seamlessly Shaping Textiles technique which led to the foundation of UNSEAM.

Maartje is the face of and the driving force behind Blossom Architecture. Large construction and interior projects in which she can implement the circular economy let her shine. She is a sustainability architect with knowledge and experience in the field of architecture, landscape and interior.

Title: Water voor stadsbomen (NL)

Lucas is cofounder of Studio 1:1, a creative research and design firm which specialises in social, spatial, and ecological questions. For their innovative approach, the firm has won The Green Architecture Competition, amongst other prizes. 

For Waterboard de Dommel, Studio 1:1 researched the design possibilities for waste streams of the waterboard. This resulted in the project Water for Urban Trees, a tree grid made of clippings of stream banks that retains water. 

12:45 Samira Boon, Studio Samira Boon

Title: TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE, a promising future

Samira Boon founded her studio in Japan and combines the adaptive and sensory qualities of textiles with computerized production techniques. Recent works in the Netherlands include Archi Folds and Hortus Bionica: innovative series of textile structures, which bring together technique, science and art. For their development she collaborates with Tokyo University, the Dutch TextielLab and the Sensor Lab. Her projects led to multiple textile innovations, which have been rewarded with e.g. the Creative Heroes Award and the Architizer A+Design-Award.

14:00 Bonnie Chopard, InLandschap

Title: Biobased buildings build landscapes

Bonnie Chopard has spatial design and building experience in NL and abroad as a biobased/circular architect, working as well in the field of landscape architecture. She has worked for diverse firms in Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and in the public realm. She uses her multidisciplinary expertise to realize potential.

14:35 Tynke van den Heuvel, Studio Wae

Title: Design Flooring solutions with a high impact on Co2 emission and a huge reduction on new resources

Tynke is product developer and producer for circular scalable and sustainable products that are made of production waste or urban mining resources. She developed 100% circular modular carpet tiles and modular carpets inspired on M.C. Esher that are made with social impact and 76% circular concrete.

Title: What about circular composites?

Process is very important to Bart. He believes that if you know where something comes from, what it is built upon, you have a much better understanding of what you are looking at. Therefore as a designer he thinks it is essential to look at the materials you are working with and how they are processed to achieve the final product. This has often played a big role in his approach on projects.

Title: The relevance of Circular Design in climate change

Jean Frantzen is studied architecture at TU Delft. He worked as an architect and designed furniture, falling in love with wood as material in the process. Since 2008, Jean works as an advisor sustainable building at DGMR.

Wies studied Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft and believes we can contribute to a better world using high-quality design. She is co-founder of the start-up Waterweg, which develops products made from dredge.

11:00 Geanne van Arkel, Interface

Title: Design with the climate in mind by learning from nature

Geanne has been working at Interface since 2003 and has contributed in various ways to working on sustainability in a holistic way, both inside and outside Interface, of which in recent years as Head of Sustainable Development in Europe. According to her, contributing to a better world and creating “the Future We Want” goes perfectly with multiple successful entrepreneurship.

Title: What can we learn from natural nanostructures for the development of materials of the future

Lydia Fraaije studied architecture at the University of Technology in Eindhoven and has a daily practice as a biomimicry architect. In her work she applies the 3.8 billion years of R&D of nature to design biomimicry buildings and biophilic interiors that are in balance with the natural ecosystem.



From a great passion for art, culture and nature and as a socially responsible entrepreneur, Nadia Jellouli-Guachati takes on different roles as an architect, teacher, project leader in the cultural field and as a farmer.

Together they founded Bio^mi with the objective to bring biomimicry into practice by developing sustainable materials for the future inspired by biological nano structures.

Titel: Bio-inspired nanostructured functional surfaces

Martin Bennink (1973) studied Applied Physics at University of Twente. Currently, as a professor (lector) NanoBio/Nanotechnology at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Martin is chairing a research group that is setting up application-driven, multidisciplinary research projects at the interface of nanotechnology and life sciences.

Title: (Not) Save For Designers: future materials

Dr Erik Tempelman has been working with design, innovation and materials for more than 20 years, both in industrial and academic settings. An eclectic scholar, Tempelman has published on a variety of subjects, e.g. on the eco-impact of automotive materials and on lightweight design.
